Brain Injuries are Often Difficult to Detect
Neurologists will often say that a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the first injury to occur in an accident, but is almost always the last injury to be diagnosed. The reason for this is that except in extreme cases, where cognitive injury results in a comatose or vegetative state, the symptoms of a TBI are not obvious, and can often only be detected in the days, weeks, and months after the initial accident.
The symptoms are usually only noticeable to family members, close friends, and coworkers, due to their familiarity with the injured person, as it becomes clear that the injured person’s behavior has changed since their accident. The person with the brain injury may not even be able to detect their own symptoms, which can include loss of cognitive ability, memory loss, changes in personality, emotional instability, and more.
The existence of brain injuries can be very difficult to prove. This is why it’s absolutely necessary to obtain the services of a professional personal injury attorney. If you believe that you, a family member, or a loved one are suffering from a brain injury, it’s critical that you talk to an attorney at Ashton & Price immediately.

What are Symptoms of Brain Injury?
Brain injuries can result in a wide array and severity of symptoms. Some TBIs are immediately and visibly obvious, while others are far more subtle and progressive in nature. Some potential signs of brain damage to watch out for after an accident include:
- Headaches
- Blindness, blurred or altered vision
- Deafness or partial loss of hearing
- Complete or partial loss of smell or taste
- Long- or short-term memory loss
- Changes in personality
- Emotional unpredictability, outbursts of anger
- Slurred speech, difficulty in choosing words
- Loss of physical reflexes and manual dexterity
If you notice any symptoms of brain injury, do not delay in seeking medical attention and legal assistance. Do not assume that headaches or other symptoms will simply go away with time. The brain is fragile, and does not heal as easily as the rest of the body does. If not treated immediately, symptoms of brain injury can worsen, and/or become permanent.
What Causes a Traumatic Brain Injury?
Many brain injuries are caused by a violent blow directly to the head. This can injure the brain in one of three ways. It can cause direct injury to the brain, by causing the brain to impact the inside of the skull, causing bruising and damage to brain tissue. Secondly, pieces of the skull can fracture and penetrate the brain. Lastly, no immediate injury to the brain may occur, but broken blood vessels can cause blood to pool inside the skull and cause a buildup of pressure in an area of the brain (subdural hematoma), leading to brain injury.
However, a brain injury doesn’t have to be caused by a direct blow to the head. Any time the brain impacts the inside of the skull, this can result in injury to the brain. This can be caused by whiplash in a car accident, a fall, or in a collision between two sports players, such as in football or baseball. These injuries are often referred to as “closed head wounds,” because there is no obvious injury to the outside of the head. However, the injury to the brain can be just as severe as that caused by a direct impact to the head.
